The bone densitometry It is a study used to determine the Bone Mineral Density (BMD) of our bones. Osteoporosis is a generalized skeletal disease in which the quantity and quality of the bones decreases chronically, favoring a greater susceptibility to fractures. For this reason, BMD is useful for the diagnosis of osteoporosis and osteopenia. The test is carried out with the device that measures the images (pixels) and gives a figure of the bone mineral quantity (CMO) per surface: BMD
Because it is important?
Bone densitometry establishes the office diagnosis of Osteoporosis. When a person suffers from Osteopenia and Osteoporosis, our bones become so fragile that our susceptibility to fractures is considerably increased with a minor blow or fall (fragility fractures). For this reason, BMD constitutes an invaluable educational tool in the prevention of fractures. With the results we can know our Z-score (if I am between 5 and 49 years old) or our T-score (if I am over 50 years old). Both values are reported in Standard Deviations (SD) with respect to the average value of the population. The lower the value of (SD) the Relative Risk (RR) of fractures is doubled.
On the other hand, the BMD of the femoral neck, together with 12 questions contained in the FRAX Mexico algorithm, provides us individually with an evaluation of the Absolute Risk (AR) of hip fracture at 10 years (Hip fracture <3%) and of all bones (Major osteoporotic <20%) and constitutes one of the criteria suggested by the World Health Organization (WHO) for the initiation of drug therapy in patients WITHOUT treatment.
There are diseases and medications that lead to accelerated decalcification from childhood, which is why performing BMD from childhood offers us a reliable parameter on the health of my bones.
Our new GE EnCore 15.0 Software allows the identification of subtrochanteric fractures in the bilateral femoral shaft.
